Benefits of Open Systems
Open systems have a number of benefits over closed systems:
The integrator has much more freedom in configuring a system and updating it for future technologies. Typically the “BEST in Class” for a particular component or function can be chosen, rather than being forced to compromise across the whole system.
The buyer has a more flexible investment, since open systems are not dependent on one particular vendor’s direction and can be reconfigured to meet changes in demand. For example, an open system’s milling machine can be used with different materials and different applications as the needs arise, and it will have better market value as a result.
Developers of open-architecture modules are more motivated to keep enhancing systems with new functionalities. Because customers can swap a module out for that of a competitors more readily, open systems tend to advance faster in capability and application.
In addition, the developer of each module can be an expert in that particular field, such as scanning, without needing also to be an expert in other fields, such as milling. This also contributes to both the performance and the rate of improvement of the open systems.
Zirconia material average cost per coping: Closed system : $25 - 30 vs Open system: $7 -$15
